Barry Hockey – Forward Groove

Our region is abuzz with lots of local talent, and this month we catch up with seasoned performer, Barry Hockey, to find out more about his band, Forward Groove.

How did Forward Groove come about?

By combining two well known local bands, 5 Way Groove and The Cycle of Fifths. There are six of us, all experienced musicians who all share the same love and passion for music but above all, we just get a buzz from delivering music to crowds that are really enjoying themselves. We have a repertoire of over 70 songs to entertain any crowd!

Who makes up your band, and what are their special talents?

We have a very versatile bunch of musicians. We have Brett Cruickshank on lead vocals and congas, and Trent Sowter on percussion. Their history extends to winning a battle of the bands, and they recorded several original songs, with one ending up being used in a surfing movie!

We also have the Miller Family, Fred, Kev and Lloyd on guitar, bass and the ukulele. The ukulele is such a unique sound and adds to the whole vibe of the band. I am on lead guitar and do backup vocals.

I have been lucky enough to work with artists like Icehouse, The Ted Mulry Gang and Swanee, just to name a few.

It’s hard to categorise us, but if I had to say what sound we have it is a combination of Rock, Reggae and Soul – so really something for everyone.

Where do you perform?

We have gigs booked and play everywhere from pubs to clubs to corporate functions and weddings. We attribute our longevity to being able to acknowledge the public’s expectation of a good time. We believe that good dance music creates a potent sound and energy that ensures the musical success of any event.

You can book us through our website, where we have listed all our bookings.

We can guarantee that at your event everyone will be dancing and singing along to their favourite songs from start to finish.
