Dr. Simon Basha is a general restorative dentist with a particular interest in the areas of dental materials science, and oral medicine and pathology, and he has undertaken and published original research in the field of oral pathology. He aims to optimise clinical outcomes through a collaborative approach to dental care. FOCUS discussed these areas of dentistry with Dr. Basha …

What is your connection with the Coffs Coast?

My wife and I moved to Coffs Harbour a little over a year ago. I was born and raised in regional NSW in a town called Orange, at the foot of Mount Canobolas. Orange grows apples, cherries and grapes, but not oranges! My wife, Lisa, is from Toronto, Canada, and has been in Australia for about seven years now. We had an opportunity to move up here, and we haven’t looked back.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and experience in the dental industry?

Being born and raised in Orange, it was an easy decision to study dentistry at Charles Sturt University. Prior to studying dentistry, I studied medical science, majoring in pharmacology. I’ve completed and published original research in oral medicine, pathology and dental public health.

I gained clinical experience in both public and private dental settings, before I came to Jetty Dental in August of 2018.

What services and procedures do you specialise in?

Practicing as a general dentist allows me to offer my patients the broadest range of dental treatments. I am able to provide my patients with preventative, restorative, cosmetic and emergency treatments. However, my greatest interests lie in endodontics (root canal treatments) and restorative (fillings and crowns) dentistry.

What makes Jetty Dental different from other dental practices in the local area?

Jetty Dental is a small, independent dental practice, started by Tony and Wendy Kershaw almost 10 years ago. Paul and Selina Crichton purchased Jetty Dental just over two years ago and have maintained the high standard of patient-centred care.

With Paul and I being the only practitioners in the practice, we are able to maintain a high level of familiarity with our patients and their treatments, throughout their entire treatment plans. We believe in keeping things local and use local dental laboratories and locally practicing dental specialists to facilitate the best outcomes for our patients.

What is the best advice you can give to a prospective customer?

Be willing to speak your mind, so we can help to achieve the best outcome for you. There are many solutions to any given problem, and one size doesn’t fit all. We enjoy planning and working closely with you to provide a result that works for you.

How has the local dental industry changed over the last few years?

Coffs Harbour is fortunate to be supported by many large dental practices. There is a changing climate in dentistry in Australia towards corporatisation of practices, and many practices within the region are now owned by large dental corporations.

Jetty Dental still believes there is a place for small independently owned dental practices. Our patients enjoy the familiarity of our staff and love the peaceful outlook from our small surgery into beautifully maintained gardens.

What services and products do you offer?

Jetty Dental offers a broad range of dental services to our patients. The majority of my week is spent providing preventative and general restorative services to my patients. This includes exams, cleans, fillings and crowns. We also understand that dental emergencies can arise at any time, and we aim to offer our patients prompt appointments when necessary. The most satisfying part of my job is helping patients that are in pain and discomfort.

What do you enjoy outside of dentistry?

I’m a keen home brewer, and that occupies a good deal of my time on weekends. I’m also a tragic South Sydney fan, and somehow still have faith that the best is yet come.

With my wife being from Canada, we are fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time travelling in North America, which is something we both really enjoy.
