Gina and Andrew

Gina and Andrew have quite a unique and beautiful love story … Some would say that their lives have been destined to be spent together since the day they were born! In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we asked them to share their story with us.

Hi Gina and Andrew. We understand you guys have known each other a long time and that you have an interesting story about your births. Can you tell us a bit about your history?

We were born on the same day just three hours apart, both in the old Coffs Harbour hospital 30 years ago. Our mothers where in the same room, but we never saw each other as I (Gina) was in Special Care, as I was premmie. My family would come in after seeing the tiny 4 lbs 4 oz me and comment on how big Andrew was at 10 lbs 1 oz.

Fast forward 14 years, and we met in a Year 8 sports class, where we instantly became close friends. One day shortly after Andrew mentioned in passing to his mother that his friend, Gina, had the same birthday as him, she asked what her last name was, and then she quickly replied, “You know, I was in the same room in hospital as her mother!”

Between Andrew’s mother and Gina’s Nan, they put all the pieces together about their birth – even having kept newspaper clippings of birthday notices with the other on it without realising. All this sure was a surprise to both of us!

After meeting in Year 8, we became pretty much inseparable but still just great friends; there were feelings from the very beginning and we tried dating, but decided we should just be friends. But as time went on and we dated other people, our feelings started to grow for each other. By Year 10 (2003) we decided to go on a holiday together, where our feelings grew even stronger.

Shortly after our return home and after having a few days apart, we were casually walking together and Andrew finally got the courage to make his real feelings known. He said he loved me and to that my heart melted, as I felt the same; it was kind of one of those movie scene moments where the characters finally end up together. And that was the start of our life together.

We are now lucky enough to have two beautiful daughters as well. Life has sure given us our challenges, but we have always stayed united and still love each other just as much as we did 15 years ago.

So have you both always lived around the Coffs Coast?

Yes, Andrew has always lived in Bellingen, and I have lived a few places, but all in the area (Coffs, Thora, Bellingen, Urunga, Valla).

Was there a particular moment you realised you were meant for each other?

Not a particular moment, but more that we didn’t want to be without each other and that over time our feelings grew to be more romantic.

Could you tell us about your marriage proposal and wedding?

Andrew proposed Valentine’s Day 2009 after a nice dinner at Latitude 30. He insisted we go for a walk on the Jetty, and then halfway out he stopped for what I thought was just a hug; he asked if I would marry him. And of course, I said yes!

We wed on the 2nd April 2011 at Aanuka Beach Resort in front of close family and friends. They say it’s lucky to have rain on your wedding day, so I guess we are lucky, because we had lovely sunshine all day until just before the reception started, when a big thunderstorm hit – along with buckets of rain.

You now have two little girls; what are some of the things you like about raising your children on the Coffs Coast?

We have chosen to raise our children here as it’s a safe, quiet, family oriented area with beautiful beaches to enjoy as a family.

Now that you have a family, do you manage to make time for yourselves as a couple?

Ha ha! We try our best, but with a four year old and three month old it is a struggle. But we do always make sure we always hug and say “I love you” to each other every night before bed.

Do you have plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

We will probably celebrate Valentine’s Day with a restaurant dinner date with the children this year, as the baby is still so young.

Is there a Valentine’s Day from the past that remains really memorable?

Our most memorable Valentine’s Day would definitely have to be 2009, the day we got engaged!

Who of the two of you is the most romantic?

Andrew’s response to this question is definitely Gina. Andrew is very shy and not very romantic, but he is a very caring man.

Are there any lessons you’ve learnt through your relationship that you’d like to pass on to other couples?

Always comfort each other and trust that the other will always be there, no matter what. And when times get tough, be there and support each other.

Thanks guys.
