This month we interviewed Guy Curan and Tonia Bodanski about their beautiful wedding earlier this year in Bellingen. We wanted to know how they put their special day together.
Congratulations on your recent wedding! When did you and Guy meet?
Long story short, Guy and I met a long time ago. You see, he is one of my brother’s best mates … Guy was always around growing up, and I may have developed a soft spot for him some time ago, haha. Guy invited me and a friend to his 21st; we kept in touch after that and almost a year later, started officially dating.
How long have you been together, and what made you decide to get married now?
Guy and I started dating seven years ago. There was no pivotal moment where we decided to get married; it was just a natural progression and something we both really wanted. However, I may have given him a not so subtle nudge haha. We are both very passionate about creating a strong, healthy and respectful relationship, and marriage was the next official step.
How did you find all the vendors?
We had a really positive experience throughout organising our wedding. We booked all local vendors; they were all very friendly and accommodating to our specific visions and ideas.
Carmel Kestles @carmelkestlesmakeupartist did our makeup and spray tans. Carmel is an incredibly talented makeup artist and always nails her work! I’ve been lucky enough to have my makeup and spray tans done by Carmel quite a few times, so it was special to have Carmel there on my wedding day as well.
Gabby Patmore @thestudio.01 did our hair; Gabby was super accommodating, especially as I changed my hair the morning of the wedding! All the girls’ hair looked awesome.
Alice Faircloth @euflorial did our amazing flowers; our arbour was incredible! We were totally blown away by her amazing work!
Fallon @photographybyfallon – we could not recommend Fallon enough. We were lucky enough to win our photography package at the Bonville Wedding Expo, and I am so happy we did! Fallon was so organised and helpful.
James @mooseandcoweddings filmed our wedding. James captured some really special moments and put them together so beautifully in a highlight film; we would highly recommend getting a videographer if you can squeeze it into your budget.
@weddingswise made us a beautiful custom cake topper, and we also hired a few bits and pieces, as well including an unplugged ceremony sign and gorgeous wishing well.
The amazing Sam Dawson @marriedbysam was our celebrant – Sam is such a beautiful person inside and out; you can tell she just loves love! We are lucky enough to know Sam personally, which made it that little bit more special, but Sam is your lady if you’re looking for a celebrant.
What were the fun parts and the challenging parts?
The fun parts were seeing all the people that mean the most to us in one venue, and feeling the huge amount of love and support for us was just so overwhelming and something we will never forget. The other fun part was seeing our vision come to life. The most challenging part was getting the RSVPs back haha. To be honest, we found the whole process relatively stress free; of course, planning a wedding there will be moments of stress, but for the most part, we didn’t experience many challenges that I can think of.
How did you come up with the style you wanted and the look you were trying to achieve?
Our beautiful venue at Cedar Bar in Bellingen set our style and look; it was perfect! I had always envisioned a relaxed, rustic style wedding. Cedar Bar being a 110-year-old church that has been mindfully renovated to capture its old character and beauty while still being modern and fresh was exactly what I had in mind.
Was your day exactly what you envisioned?
YES, and more. It’s so hard to imagine it all coming together, but when it does, it’s a pretty amazing moment. I always had a picture in my head, and with the help of family, friends and vendors, they made it all come together so beautifully.
Any advice to brides out there planning their big day?
Use spreadsheets! They kept me on track and on time. It’s so hard to try and remember everything; it’s so much easier to have all your information in one place, so it’s not always on your mind. Also, RELAX; your wedding is supposed to be a special time; it’s silly to get caught up in all the minor details. Too many people get caught up in the specifics and forget what it’s all about – marrying the man or woman of your dreams. The reality is, the minor details would only be noticed by you anyway. Ask for advice from your vendors; they are the experts and are super helpful if you let them in.
What was the best part of the day for you?
Our vows; that was the most raw and beautiful moment. Funnily enough, our vows were very similar and read much the same. Our vows were very important to us, and we both put a lot of time into them.
The idea of standing up in front of everyone and telling your partner what they mean to you is super daunting, but on the day when we were up there looking at each other, it honestly felt like we were the only ones in the room for just a moment.
