Big Garden Furniture in Woolgoolga designs and handcrafts high-quality furniture right here on the Mid North Coast. FOCUS drove out to the Northern Beaches to have a look around the showroom and catch up with owner and designer Gareth Owen.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and your business?
Big Garden Furniture was born in 1996 at Halfway Creek. We took over the business in 2008 and moved the factory to Bosworth Rd, Woolgoolga and opened the showroom in 2009, which is now opposite Woolworths @ 1852 Solitary Islands Way, Woolgoolga.
When and why did you start your business?
We basically got in to the furniture business when the owner approached us due to moving interstate, and we always had an avid interest in furniture design.
What is the best thing about your job?
We get to create some wild and wonderful furniture that you cannot get “off the shelf” in the stores, and we love meeting people and bringing their ideas and dreams to reality. Customers can come to us with a brief, we then come up with a concept, design the furniture, and then we create!
Handcrafting furniture from a natural local resource is a great way to make a living.
What makes Big Garden Furniture different from other companies in the local area?
Well, for a start there’s no-one else making furniture like us. We have a unique style of construction that makes our furniture more durable and stronger than everyone else.
Not only do we make great outdoor furniture, we make awesome indoor furniture as well, including and not limited to dining table and chairs, beds, vanity units, desks, hall stands, wardrobes and practically any furnishing in your home or office.
We use only the best materials available and support as many local businesses as possible to aid our local community. You can find our furniture all over Australia, in restaurants, parks, schools, clubs and pubs, you might even be sitting on one of our pieces while reading this magazine …
We design our furniture to be built once, and all our furniture has been built to last a lifetime!
Do you offer solutions for budgets of different sizes?
Yes, 90% of our business is for custom orders, and we work one on one with customers to give them the best possible product to suit their individual budgets. We offer discounts for multiple and bulk orders, which is especially great for businesses.
What is the best advice you can give to a prospective customer?
Don’t purchase a product based on price alone; buy the best possible product and demand quality at all costs. Look after your furniture; as after all, it’s an investment.
What are your plans for the future of BGF?
Keep designing new styles of furniture. We just released a new range for the SOLITARY, which is great for alfresco areas.
What plans do you have for 2017/2018?
Keeping that one close … though watch this space.
What’s been the best business advice you’ve received?
Keep improving your products; service is king! And enjoy what you do.
What do you enjoy most about working on the Coffs Coast?
We live in one of the most livable pristine areas in Australia, if not on Earth … never cold, plenty of surf for the down time, and looking after the locals.
