Focus had a chat with Tim Welsford, Manager of the Southern Cross University Sports & Fitness Centre, to find out more about the facility and all the great services available to inspire your health goals.
Hi Tim, SCU Sports & Fitness Centre is the little gym doing big things. Can you tell us about the facility and what services you offer there?
The gym sector in Coffs Harbour is competitive, but we focus on being an affordable, full service gym. Our fees begin at about half of the going rate at other local gyms, and we have qualified staff in the centre every minute we are open. We have no start up fees, no program costs – we just try to make is as easy as possible for people to improve their health and wellness. We also hire out our court, footy field and AFL Oval to clubs and community groups. Some of our regular hirers are Coffs Badminton Club and Hockey Coffs Coast, who provide a great atmosphere in the Centre.
Who uses the facility?
Everyone! We have a large cohort of our membership from the CHEC community, but members of the public are very welcome too. Because of our price point, we are very accessible for students, families and older adults. We are part of the Fitness Passport Gym Network, so we attract people from the Coffs Health Campus, Department of Education and other government organisations who have access to Fitness Passport. We also have a resident Accredited Exercise Physiologist who is awesome with special populations, so we do really cater for everyone.
The gym is a full service gym; what does that mean?
That every minute we are open, there is a qualified staff member available to assist you at no additional cost. Once you become a member, there are no additional fees for programs, assessments or advice. You will not be approached by personal trainers trying to make a sale – only qualified gym staff if you would like some help.
Do you need a membership to access the gym, and what does it cost to attend?
We do have casual rates (pay per visit) but the most affordable way to access our facility is through membership starting at around $6 per week. As an example, we have three month memberships starting from $75, and six month memberships starting from $130. No additional start up fees, no additional costs for programs. I challenge anyone to find better value.
We also hire out our court space and sporting fields at a starting rate of $30 per hour for community groups and again, that is the best rate you will find in Coffs. We are really focusing on our small facility having a big community impact.
What are your opening hours?
Our gym is open Monday – Thursday from 6am – 8pm and Fridays from 6am – 7pm. We are closed on weekends and public holidays. About our court and field spaces; hire agreements can be made for any day at any time.
Who makes up the team there?
We have six great instructors who all bring a different skill set to our team. Fiona is qualified in Pilates and massage therapy and is awesome at core strength. Helen tends to engage with our special populations and is undertaking further study with dementia patients. Tim is great with training for hypertrophy and sports specific gains. Wi is brilliant at group training and programming for teams of people to get results. And, Ethan loves programming Olympic lifts and functional movements. I’m the sixth instructor; I’m good at talking …
What advice would you give someone wanting to improve their health?
Go to your GP for a check-up, and then if everything is okay, join our gym. And, do it today. Sometimes the biggest hurdle is just starting and once you start, it gets a lot easier. We only get one chance at life, and most people want to be their best self. We can help with that.
What’s your favourite inspirational saying?
I have lots. We have a blackboard in our gym where we often put up inspirational quotes. Come in and check them out.
