Social Scene – August 2012

We are over half way through the year, and it’s the time when things start buzzing.

More events are staged at this time of the year and of course, it’s the start of our local racing season. It’s no secret I am a bit partial to the racing scene – I love it! Le Dãin Designs Jewells was a sponsor for a couple of years, and we’ve had huge amounts of fun! We treat ourselves every year to the luxury of the corporate lounge for the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Carnival – we get a table, we frock up and have a wonderful time. This year, Le Dãin Designs Jewells has joined forces with Barbara Wenman’s gorgeous clinic La Fleur D’Alyse, so there’ll be 20 of us enjoying race day excitement. Can’t wait!

Talking about getting dressed up, it never ceases to amaze me that these days teenage boys are also fashion conscious, and The Son seems to have more body splashes and hair products than me! He whooshes past leaving a trail of blokey cologne strong enough to compete with David Jones’ perfumery! I’ll get back to that later …

I attended the Grand Opening of the new Coffs Harbour Westpac Commercial and Agribusiness branch. It was staged at their brand new impressive building on Harbour Drive, where over 120 guests walked onto the red carpet and preceded to enjoy a fabulous evening catered by Allyson Schumer, who has just opened the Rainforest Café at the new Specialist Medical Centre. This, of course, was all washed down with glasses of bubbles and fine wines. Guests were entertained with a presentation of the history of Westpac in Coffs Harbour from the original opening in 1905, and Steve Young Photography was there snapping away for the event. I keep bumping into Steve at various functions and as he has a swisher camera than me, I always try to wangle a great pic for the night. Thank you Steve! Craig McGregor opened the night and thanked all their current and future clients for attending. He also thanked dignitaries such as Mayor Keith Rhoades, Andrew Fraser and executives Andrew Davis, Steve Hannan and Graham Jennings. It was a splendid way to launch Westpac’s new presence in Coffs.

We took our niece down to the fabulous Sawtell Chilli Festival. The sun was shining, and I think it was the biggest crowd I have ever seen down there. The Son has outgrown hanging around with mum, so it was lovely that I had The Niece to enjoy the fun of the festival. As usual, oodles of tasty hot treats were there to sample, from mildly spicy to the BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF type of chilli fare. There is a group (mainly men, I might add) who I think go the whole year getting ready to compete with their mates as to who can handle the most heat!

Running amok were entertainers Kirsty from ‘So Dance Studio’ and Andrew Smith from ‘SMILE Productions’, who as you can see by the photo were all dressed up to fit in with the festival and entertain the crowds. To add to the fun there were fabulous bands to entertain the crowds and plenty of stalls and raffles on the go. It’s a day for everyone, and this one was a corker!

I like to mention market days, as they are so family friendly, and the Woolgoolga markets are a real treat! Put on by the Marine Rescue Woolgoolga and held on the beach reserve, the markets have a spectacular view and up to 80 food and market stalls. Peruse the market, and stay for lunch or afternoon tea. You can definitely make a day of it. For enquiries, call 6654 0447.

Also, don’t forget it’s the 10th Anniversary of Sawtell Bowling Club’s Festival Week at the end of this month. There is a market day to enjoy, with stalls, raffles and a money board, as well as the bowls, of course! Don’t miss out!

Going back to dressing up and pampering yourself … men do a bit of this, but not a lot. The Husband likes his aftershaves, but doesn’t like much “fussing up”, as he calls it. I tried to slap a face mask on him once, but he wouldn’t be in it. He insists all that is just for the girls … sure! You should see The Husband and The Son preening themselves! Even The Cat has a little vanity problem … it’s always throwing itself into cutsie poses to get attention. We ladies just love pampering ourselves and aren’t shy to admit it, so it’s handy we have an abundance of beauty and hair spas here on the Coffs Coast.

I bumped into Kate from Beauty on the Promenade recently, enjoying a celebration lunch with her father. She was nearly bursting with excitement about the news that her business is undergoing a massive expansion due to be completed in early September. How exciting!

A great night was had by one and all recently at the Jetty Memorial Theatre. The show Love Letters was presented by 2CS FM, Newcastle Permanent, The Jetty Memorial Theatre and Coffs Harbour City Council. The night was a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital Ward as part of the Give Me 5 For Kids charity. The show starred two of Coffs Harbour’s hottest talents – Kelly McLoughlin and Mark Conaghan. Love Letters was a little different and in the words of the author A.R. Gurney, it needed no lengthy rehearsal and no special sets. It was comprised of letters, notes and cards exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together. These people went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. What a great show for a more than worthy cause.

Also recently attended the dramatic production of Shakespeare’s King Lear, which was being staged by Chats Productions. Boy, have we got some talent in this region! The Jetty Memorial Theatre has such a fantastic atmosphere, and you can have a meal prior to the shows at any of the eateries along the Jetty Strip or at The Promenade. The Theatre is also licensed, so if you fancy a little drinkie you can just relax in the bar before the show.

Going back to being beautiful (or trying to be) … I was looking in the work diary the other day and written in the big DON’T FORGET type of writing in fluro was ‘Hair Appointment’. I was just thinking that I didn’t remember making my date with my fabulous hairdresser, Natalie, when in walks The Husband and moans, “Now don’t let The Son go down and pinch that appointment … that’s mine! Last time he went and got his hair cut, and it wasn’t his turn!” I just looked at him in amazement. What could I say to the man that says he doesn’t like getting FUSSED UP?! Not a lot …

Here’s to The Vain … and The Beautiful!

Carole,

Le Dãin Designs.
