Wicked Berries is a fabulous local business designed to tantilise our taste buds with their delectable treats. We catch up with owner Kerry, to find out more about his business and his specialty chocolate coated strawberries.
> How did Wicked Berries first come about?
Wicked Berries kicked off in 2007 and was originally started to complement my wedding cakes with ‘Modern Cake Creations’. Since then, it has grown into a unique business supplying amazing gift boxed fine chocolate coated strawberries to the East Coast between the Sunshine Coast and Wollongong.
We are now gearing up for leasing around Australia to already existing businesses such as bakeries / cafés who want to incorporate a quality gift service. We already have businesses securing their suburb / town, which is a good sign of things to come.
My goal is for Wicked Berries to be a household name around Australia and the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to that special occasion!
> What’s your background in the industry?
I made myself familiar with chocolate as soon as I commenced my pastry cooking apprenticeship in 1987 and haven’t looked back. Taking out the NSW Pastry Cooking Apprentice of the Year helped give me leverage in an industry where it’s hard to have a profile unless you come from the major cities.
In 2002 I was fortunate to win the prestigious Australian Baking Industry National Scholarship Awards, followed by an invaluable scholarship in Chicago USA as the prize. And for 8 years now, I’ve been a regular writer for Australia and New Zealand’s largest bakery magazine.
For the past 12 years I have been a director of the ‘Bushmans Bakery’ franchise, with six bakeries in the Coffs Coast as well as Port Macquarie and most recently Tamworth.
In 2002 I established ‘Modern Cake Creations’, which certainly keeps me on my toes. I absolutely love this business, because it’s my art and a great way of expressing myself … and what better way to create art than with chocolate! I guess I’m one of those lucky people who enjoys my work.
Who was it who said if you turn a hobby into your work, you will never have to ‘work’ a day in your life? I can tell you now … it’s a lot of work with long hours. Ha, but yeah … it’s good fun, and I don’t mind doing this for the rest of my life if I’m forced to.

Wicked Cakes – ever seen a birthday cake like this?
Exclusive to Wicked Berries, these birthday / celebration cakes are becoming in high demand. Looks and taste are everything, so it’s no wonder everyone wants one.
Wedding Bonbonniere – our berries can be ordered individually on their own (minimum order of 25) or in a clear box to be presented on tables for the wedding guests. The Tuxedo and Bride berries are great for this, and very rarely they make it to the end of the reception without being eaten!
> Can people request custom packs?
Yes, they can. Every now and then we have customers requesting a different finish to their berries; for example, anyone that can’t eat nuts can change their ‘Sampler’ pack to another type, and so on. We have a good range of packs available, so the vast majority find something they like.
With the Survival Pack – we also have non-alcoholic sparkling wine available.
